Letters from my mother (in progress)

Tuesday, March 27, 1979     (To Grammy)

Hi:

Guess what— I am going on a diet again— I mean a friend of mine on Gilbert Street and I are starting jogging every day and going to the YMCA every Tuesday and Thursday nights for swimming and steam room and exercise room. It costs 2$ each but that is a cheap way to have a evening of exercise and use of facilities and we are determined to lose some more weight. I have also started my exercises at home, morning and evening.

I had been going on a food binge the last couple of weeks and my scale hit 142 for the first time since I had lost weight— I had always managed to remain between 135 and 140 but 140 was tops. Last week when I hit 142 I said this is it and Dell felt the same way. She drives so we are jogging at Waverly Oaks every afternoon. I bring Dawn and she brings Becky and they play at the park while we “jog” around the Oaks. We are not overdoing. We both take it very easy and are just doing a little each day. Not like some joggers who are really into it. We jog a little and walk— then jog some more and walk. Not too much but enough to hopefully take some pounds off. I am down to 135 today so I guess I can lose some more.

I will add on more later as I have to do something and will stop for now and type more another time.

Friday—

Okay still exercising but cheated today— I bought some raison Danish— Sara Lee’s for kids and they didn’t like them so I ate them— naughty naughty. However, I think I won’t eat anything else today to do penance. I normally eat balanced meals but today I just craved them dreadfully.

I don’t seem to have lost any weight yet but I feel thinner. Dell and I have been jogging or playing “tennis” – hitting the ball around— we both forgot how to play but it’s good exercise. We try to spend from 3 to 4 doing something active. On good days that is— today is rainy so we didn’t go.

We started swimming at the YMCA in Brighton on Tuesday and Thursday nights. I love it. We leave around 6:30 to 6:45 and get there and swim for awhile; then we go in the steam room for 10 minutes or so then back into the pool and then the steam room again and if time, if not too late, we do the pool again. Last night we didn’t get in a third time as we started a little later. After we get done, we take a shower there, wash, shampoo our hair and they have blow dryers there. Sometimes we go to the exercise room and do a few exercises. I don’t do much as I don’t want to get sweaty after showering and I do exercises every morning and every evening— except evenings at YWCA— I figure that balances that night out. It is an awfully nice place and pool is lovely and steam room super. We both feel so great when we leave.  Usually we stop at Friendly’s next door for a cup of coffee and get home anywhere between 9:30 to 10:15.

I know I am going to enjoy going and it only costs 2$ each night. I could join on a membership but it’s hard to come up with such a large amount of money and we feel for the 2$ twice a week, we certainly get our money’s worth in exercise and relaxation. I just enjoy it immensely. And hope we can lose some pounds. I feel a little firmer already. My belly is still so flabby but honestly it seems firmer than it was even though any weight loss doesn’t seem to be registering. I guess the exercises will help firm up so anyway.

Now on the security deposit situation. I told you I think that we had filed a form for a Small Claims Hearing. I think it will be around April 30. On March 24, I received a rather nasty letter from Mrs. DePamphilis, stating, “ I have decided that I would prefer to accept a financial loss than to deal any further with this situation. I realize now that I should simply have not allowed people who choose to live as you do to remain as tenants on my property for so long. Your check is attached.”

And this letter had a check for 250.00 enclosed in it. It really made my blood boil and I am completely disgusted and Jim and I talked it over and we figure the things that she accused us of and her nasty manner and everything that we would not accept this check and take the matter to court. We have already filed for double damages and although I agree to some minor things— the amount she had stated $150 and her list of things such as the part for the oil burner etc made me so mad and I have had such a hassle with her that we would continue with our suit. Even if we only get the $250, I don’t care. It is the principle of the thing. John, the minister of the church wrote us a very nice letter of general reference and I have all my oil bills to prove we always had oil and since I have had to send certified letters and expend money and time on this situation; we are not going to just take this check for her convenience. I feel she has put us through a lot of aggravation and inconvenience and also has cast a slur on our reputation and I certainly am not to meekly accept this check at this time.

I will write you what I replied to her. I was so mad that I asked John— Mrs O’s son to compose me a letter as every time I tried to write one I got carried away and he does a lot of legal work and he composed me a “beauty”— I think it is just perfect.

“Dear Mrs. DePamphilis,

Enclosed please find your check for $250.00

Two months ago we were agreeable to accepting your offer of $250 as a refund of our security deposit even though it was not the full amount. However, your reneging on your initial offer to settle for $250 and subsequent abuse, and our initiation of Court action has made it impossible for us to accept the enclosed check at this late date.”

                                                          VTY

Don’t you think that is a corker! It is short and sweet and John also said if we feel so strongly we should certainly not let her get away with it. According to law, when she sent us that check for $150, that nullified the $250 which we had said originally we would accept and we didn’t have to accept it now. So we are continuing with our decision to take it to Small Claim— even if we don’t get as much, Dell told me she had a situation similar one time and the landlord had phoney doctored bills and she got socked— but anyhow, I don’t want to take that check— I will take my chances in court. For us it is the principle of the thing.

Will let you know what happens.

Enclosed is clip of Jimmy’s game with Lexington. They scrimmaged Arlington and won and he got a goal.. Tonight there is a game in Burlington against Medford so I can’t write much longer. I don’t know if it is a playoff or not as according to the schedule we were all done playing. I don’t know what this game is for!

Sorry I haven’t written sooner but between working out with Dell and the church I haven’t had much time at all to sit. Winnie called but I wasn’t home. She told Jim about Fred Boston. That is a shame but wasn’t he quite ill. It seems you said he wasn’t well. I really don’t have time to call her now as we have to leave very shortly and I must get ready but I assume the funeral will be in South Berwick as Jim said the wake was there, I believe. I shall call her. Or perhaps I shall call you myself tonight after we get home from hockey as it will be later in the evening and evening rates.

I must run— glad to hear your headaches are gone. I guess we won’t make it there this weekend. I am not sure if Little League and Booster tryouts are this week. They are either this weekend or next. Never a dull moment.

Love to you both and take care of yourselves and let’s hope for some good weather ahead. Love Jim, Candy and kids and Grey Grey too!

Hi:                        (undated letter to Grams)

Well, seeing as it is so slow here today, I will take time to write you a letter. I don’t seem to get it written at home as there always seems to be something to do when I get home.

So far I have been able to handle Larry’s work pretty well. Hope he won’t criticize me too much when he gets back if I did something wrong.

I am caught up and am stamping envelopes with new address of local 8 as his envelopes are old addresses and need to have 50 Congress St. stamped instead of Braintree where he used to have his offices.

Went to kids game last night— they won 9-0. They have a game tonight and if they should win that, they will be in first place for the first half of the season.

Jimmy is doing real well and hits most every time. He changed his batting stance— he was striking out every time when he started the season and since changing his stance at the plate he now hits every time. Last night he got a triple. David hit a single too. He does pretty well but doesn’t know how to play yet. Last night he was on second base with one out and the kid up hit a fly ball which was an out. David didn’t realize he wasn’t supposed to run if ball was caught and started to run to third base and thus was out as they threw the ball to second base and he was half way to third. But he will learn. He only plays part of the game whereas Jimmy plays the whole game but Jimmy didn’t play the whole game until this year. As Davy gains more experience in a year or two he will play the whole game too. He plays the outfield, left or right and Jimmy is the shortstop and he does very well there. He makes good plays.

Dad’s bike works very well— I love it. This summer I hope to get some riding in and am glad it is finally fixed.

All the girls here in same boat today— only a couple of men are in and it is so quiet— there is practically nothing to do. Next week it will be so hectic with Moe gone. They haven’t had anyone in response to the ad— a few have called but not come in or shown up. We will have to wait and see what happens if anyone comes in or perhaps (rest of this letter is missing)

(this letter starts at page 5 and not dated)

Tuesday for cub scout party just rolled out cookies and baked— I made 100 cookies Tuesday and now still had dough left for baking tonight— rolls can also be frozen but as I had two parties to bake for this week the dough kept fine— I made some with Christmas cookie cutters about two weeks ago and frosted but where I make so many it’s a pain and messy and kids like candy cane shape which is quick and no cutters needed—

I’ll send you clipping about Jimmy’s game when we get paper Thursday— I’m dying to see what it says as it was most exciting game— it looked like they were sure to lose 3-2 when Greg got the tying goal with about 20 seconds left and we were then happy with a tie and then with 1 second left, Jimmy after getting a couple of shots on net kept pressure on and he wasn’t facing the net— he got the puck and kind of had to back shoot it in desperation and what a shot. Everyone was buzzing— people kept coming up telling us what a shot and how good Jimmy was and coach just couldn’t believe it— the clock had actually been on 0 and buzzer went off right after he scored— one second later and it wouldn’t have counted— he kept right in there trying and it paid off— it was such a turn around game— everyone was ecstatic and Jimmy was buried by his teammates on the ice— what a thrilling ending— everyone was just shaking their heads and couldn’t believe it! Something like that rarely happens even in pro hockey— it was a perfect goal and a hard one as he was in a difficult position to shoot but he got that puck and just let it go right at the net and wow— bedlam! You should have heard the announcer he said goal for the Robins (and then he paused for effect and then practically shouted his name Jimmy Utley— really accenting his name and such a roar from the crowd— we were so proud!! Jim was actually shaking he was so proud and me— I kept hitting Jim’s shoulder and screaming along with everyone else— his shoulder must be tired tonight—

Won’t write more now— I’m going to bed— Sunday I get up so early to get kids ready for Sunday school and I have to clean up kitchen— I just left everything soaking tonight— too tired to clean up!

Love

And write when you can!

Candy Jim and kids too

Sunday night,

Another exciting day— David’s team finally won a game— same score as Jimmy’s, 4-3. His team is Boston College and they played Cornell— it was very exciting— they put David on defense and he doesn’t know where the defense position is very well but managed to stop a couple of players from getting through. He did okay— nothing like Jimmy but he did okay— they were so excited— they have not won a game before— their goalie is TERRIBLE and doesn’t even appear to try— he fools around sits down on the ice and doesn’t pay any attention to game— I think David’s whole team is frustrated— the skaters won the game today keeping the puck in other end as much as possible— they were thrilled to finally win a game— it was a tough game but they did well— hope movie comes out that Jim took! We had pictures of Jimmy last year and just had to get David’s “big game” on film. He was so happy we took them. I don’t know if he’ll be like Jimmy but he has a “ball” and that’s what counts and also gives him sense of teamwork and confidence— he still is not sure of himself out on the ice— give him a couple of years and he’ll have a better grasp of game— Jimmy has the natural ability— Davy is fluid but lacks confidence and kind of lets others go first and is content to be last in exercise etc— he watches others and copies them— he doesn’t have confidence to be among first in drills etc but hopefully as he continues year to year his confidence will improve and he won’t be so dependant— it really has been a great weekend with Jimmy’s win and now David’s team winning.

Christmas party at church was very nice— it always is. That is it for parties— no more I hope— I’ve had my fill of parties this week. Won’t write anymore as I want to have supper— write when you can.

Love from us all

Candy Jim and kids too!

Hi,                   (not dated)

Just a short note to say hello. I am enclosing clip from paper with Jimmy’s name in it!

Last night they had a cub scout monthly meeting. All scouts had to dress as Indians— I didn’t buy anything— I used some black thin material I had for fringe for shirt and pants— made front and back panel for hanging from waist from some material I had— used same material and took paper ad flyer and rolled into hollow log and covered with material for quiver or whatever you call what arrows are held in on back— attached string to both ends so it could be slung over back— made bow out of willow branch stripping bark off it and made about 5 arrows from some straight branches— stripping bark also and making arrowheads out of aluminum foil fitted over ends to go in quiver. Also found piece of cement rock— broke in rough shape of a hatchet and found branch with little branch and fitted stone into V and bound with string— it looked very real— he wore a red bandana (pair of Dawn’s red tights) as a band on head— they had a contest— they picked best one from his den— they had 6 finalists— out of at least 50 boys— he did not win but he looked the realist of all of them— however all finalists but him had fancy headdresses which I think impressed the judge although in real Indian life not many wore headdresses! He did well to qualify for a finalist especially as I didn’t go out and spend any money on his costume— it was all stuff I had—

His den did an Indian dance around a big tee pee on the stage— Jimmy was the leader as he did the dance the best— they looked real cute— I should have brought my camera but didn’t think of it— I didn’t know that they’d be on the stage! They had a cute game— contest— one den at a time ten boys— average stand in line and have a string in their mouth with a marshmallow hanging from the other end— the winner is one who can chew the string trying to bring marshmallow up and into mouth first without touching with hands— it was fun. Make sure you tell kids to take marshmallow out of mouth and remove string before eating marshmallow after game— might be a cute idea for a party! String was about 15 inches long! After kids all had a turn— den mothers competed! Rose wouldn’t get up but most others did! About 10-12 kids at a time doing it in line, facing audience— good number! Just thought I’d tell you in case you ever wanted a cute contest-game for a party that is not a running around type game—

Won’t write anymore now— write when you can— Love Candy, Jim and kids too!

Also in soccer— last game Cunniff lost 4-1— the one goal was Jimmy’s— he got only goal for his team. They didn’t have full team as not all boys showed up but played anyways as they didn’t want to forfeit game!

Sunday night

Hi
it's very late and going to bed— Davy’s team lost 5-4— they are tied for second place—children's day service was very nice a very nice program done by children including skits from Bible—songs— slides made by children themselves— presentation of promotions and Bibles— Davy got a Bible this year. All children got geranium plants— it was very nice I won't write more— is 11:30 PM and I'm tired— will put an envelope and have Jim mail this. Love from us all Candy Jim and kids also.

Enclosed is program-- Davy's name is in it for receiving Bible— add to scrapbook when you can! And promotions since you have scrapbook— they will keep better!

With the camera in my lap— I had used up most of film anyways and was saving some for getting on going to get ribbon but somehow when it came time to give out ribbons after “fire” performance— the one who put lights out had left for a few moments and they started giving out ribbons before lights came on— it was lightish outside still but really to dark to get picture and Dawn's name was called before they got lights back on— but I took film after with her and Shirley holding ribbons so hope it comes out— it was quite a large turnout and seats were full and then some— I was surprised the older ones were very good but I used film on Don so didn't get others— so all in all it was a very busy weekend— Friday night as I told you on phone Jimmy's team played “Cubs” (the first place team) who hadn't lost a game so far and beat them 5-3. This morning David had his first “real” game and he pitched three innings— they have to have two pitchers— each pitches three innings— no more. I had a little film left from previous game I talk of Jimmy in camera and used that up— I think the batteries were dead so I don't know if it will come out— he played left field the last three innings— they played the “Padres” and won 4-1 (by the way David's team is the “Twins”— same as Jimmy last year— Jim had to give up coaching— he and Rose’s brother were doing it but with two jobs— Jimmy’s games and me in hospital he just couldn’t handle it this year so another father on David’s team is helping Dennis so it is working out fine and David still can play even though under age as long as I submitted a letter stating we assume full responsibility for any injuries if they occur as Booster insurance won’t cover anymore not 8 by August 1st— David is a month shy of age minimum. So anyway he had game at 8 am— went to that— got through at 9:45 and then rushed Jimmy to Pitch, Hit and Run competition at Victory Field in Watertown— we weren’t going to stay thinking it would be an all day affair but it was very well organized and it only lasted a little over an hour so we stayed and watched and am so glad we did— they had 9 year old division; 10 years; 11 years; and 12 year olds— each age group had to compete separately— they have three categories— pitch, a net set up and they give each boy four pitches to try and hit net— so many points for each hit on net (no one is Jimmy’s hit net— but Jimmy came closest); then they went to a different area where they had three balls (boy throws it up in the air and trys to see how far he can hit it— only three tries per kid) and if you don’t hit it or hit grounder it doesn’t count as points— but only 3 balls per boy whatever they do— so they have to hit or have 0 points. Jimmy hit ball farthest 125.25 I heard man yell— they marked spot where ball lands with flag and longest hit is the one that counts— the boy who hit it next farthest to Jimmy hit 105 (I don’t know if feet or meters— feet I assume) and one boy didn’t hit any of 3 balls at all! Then his group went to another section of field where there was a diamond and they had to run the bases and were timed— one had to run clean— if you slide into a base you were disqualified and had to touch each bag or disqualified— I think his time was pretty good— couldn’t hear time but pretty even with others— I think the “hitting” points helped him win— after all ages had done each of the three things (pitch, hit and run), they all had to go back to the grandstand and sit and wait for announcements of winners and runner-ups!
